MORMONS are supposed to be better than this.....

I am disappointed in MY PEOPLE. Burning the flag of a black family just because the nation spoke against racism and spoke for diversity & hope. Instead of celebrating this history moment in the cause of liberty MY PEOPLE sent to each other hateful awful text messages full of intolerance and shame. This confuses me. Doesn't the gospel of Christ have meaning to MY PEOPLE. Is his message not one of LOVE and forgiveness and compassion and non judgement. I see fear and scare tactics and people believing the most ridiculous fairy tales. Instead of pulling together as a people...we show who we really are deep down. Protesters surround our temples and declare us to be bigots. WE ARE!!! We worked so hard to show the world that we had overcome our prejudices of colored people. That is all UNDONE. Since the election...My father will not talk to me. I shed tears in the still of the night.

I feel a lot the same way.

I hurt as well. I hurt that even in our congregations we are not understood or accepted. I was taught that we should embrace someone in sacrament meeting who smelled of cigarette smoke or alcohol. We can tolerate adulterers in our midst, but have no idea what to do with gay people. Surely God would want them to feel welcome in our midst. I pray that someday, the Church will find a way make all feel welcome. The Church doesn't need to abandon its beliefs to accomplish this. They need to view homosexuals as children of a loving God and leave the judgment to Him.

Oh phooey! I had not heard of anything in the news concerning this. Typical. Sigh...

Sorry about your father, I know how that one goes - 31 years refusing to talk with me!

I am not an Obama supporter (nor McCain for the matter either!), but you don't have a temper tantrum because your candidate lost!

Gees!

yeah I thought it was stupid too. But on the other hand I think its unfair to judge their actions based on their faith. Do we know these are active LDS people? Okay, so they are from Utah, are they even Mormon or are we making the assumption that they are just because they are from Utah.

You know you can be Mormon and be stupid and the stupid act of one person is isn't representive of the whole. I mean is every gay person like those currently cursing Pres Monson outside the temples? You'd probably be the first to say its unfair to judge all gay people by the acts of one. But thats exactly what you are doing judgening all Mormons by the stupid acts of another.

Am I happy that Obama is President. No. But will I accept it until I get a chance to vote him out in four years? Yes. This is America.

At this point both sides have the extremes. The real issue here is that these protests are going to polarize the middle. The people who may feel that "okay its wrong but they have rights" when they begin to feel attacked when they see their sacred symbls attacked or they see their LDS neighbors who they know aren't bigots maligned, they are going to act. This bothers me personally because it will only lead to further stereotyping on both sides. This will lead to further conflict. And those of us in the middle will end up losing on both ends.

Crow ..I am reminded of that great movie "12 Angry Men" when Henry Fonda had brought all his fellow jurors to face the truth..that is all but one. He said to this final hold out, "your alone now... we all have reasonable doubt. We're still willing listen. Try to convince us that your point of view is valid" Personal prejudice is an ugly thing no matter how you slice it. I would ask you Crow...Is your love for your wife more sacred than a committed gay couple? Since you banned marriage for the committed gay couple they must then live in sin. Can your really say that gay couples have a place at the gospel table. You deny that my good friend committed suicide because he could not resolve the conflict of feeling that he was evil for being gay! He felt rejected by family, community and his church. Please do not use his death as a political ploy on my part. It is very personal. The flag burning incident was a Utah event and I consider Utahans as my people. I own that. It just saddens me. The repulsive disgusting anti-Obama text messages were all sent to and from active church members. That too saddens me. These are also my people. We are better than that. We are taught better than that. We seems to have our blind spots. May I suggest that gay is one of them. I also note that you have commented on my blog and I have always welcomed your point of view. It is needed. I know you represent one who has been down the road. You should oblige us at your post also. Just a thought.
